Accent Colour: How to Add a Little Attitude to a Neutral Space

Last week me and my husband had a rather lively discussion over something I never thought I would have to fight about with a man: the colour of the walls in the living room! Don’t get me wrong, I love my husband and I love his sense of style, but I always thought it was going to be me making the interior design/decor decisions in our home.

Apparently, not the case. I wanted to paint the walls in the living room in a strong red nuance that will perfectly complement the white pillars, the grey sofa and the metal decorations. Plus, red has always been and still is such a trendy colour! Then he came in and put some kind of a serious veto on my wish: “The walls are going to stay white and I don’t want to argue about it ”. I was stunned! Surprised beyond belief!

He claims that adding colour on our walls would suffocate the space and would make it feel even smaller. Having that in mind, although we’re neat freaks, we do know how to create a mess with our clothes all over the place. That would be quite the disturbance which, with the occasional work I do from home, certainly wouldn’t help my case.

Occasional Chairs

I guess your natural assumption would be that, as a woman, I would stubbornly hold onto my wish to use the red colour on the walls; but you’d be wrong. I let him have his white walls, and I incorporated the red colour in a much better way; by choosing all new, fancy decorations. Painting just the walls would’ve created a whole new ambiance in the room, but adding new decorations changed the entire look of it. So, naturally, I started with my research and spent some money on my favourite activity – online shopping.

A luscious, bold, red, occasional chair

One way to completely alter the look of a room is with occasional chairs. These are chairs that differ largely in the way they look from the rest of the chairs you have in your home. Plus, you can buy them only one at a time, which implies they can be used as a single piece. I got one with a super elegant design and large enough to make you feel super comfy. Occasional chairs are convenient too; besides their decorative purpose, they also give you an extra sitting space to accommodate your guests.

Pillows

Normally, I got red pillows for the grey sofa bed. Lots of them: monocoloured and patterned, especially those with geometrical shapes. I love pillows, they really make a difference when it comes to decorating a room.

Flowers

Since I didn’t get to have my red walls, I decided to splurge a little and get a bouquet of fresh, bloody red roses for the living room’s coffee table. I know they’ll eventually die and I’ll have to throw them, but they’ll perfectly serve their purpose until then. With the occasional chair and the pillows complementing each other, the bouquet is the perfect element to wrap it all up. Instead on the coffee table, I figured it would be better to fill in the awkwardly empty corner between the two sofas. The perfect harmony of colours.

In the end, we both got what we wanted; I got the red colour to put me in a good mood, and he got the white walls to give him a feeling of spaciousness. The art of marital compromise.
