While non-ferromagnetic materials like copper and aluminium are not induction compatible, they can still be made suitable for induction stovetops when bonded or layered with a magnetic base material like stainless steel. This ferromagnetic layer allows the cookware to interact with the induction cooktop’s magnetic field and heat up effectively. Here are other materials commonly used in induction cookware.

Cast Iron

Cast iron is one of the most naturally induction-suitable materials available. Since it’s ferromagnetic, it responds strongly to the magnetic field generated by an induction cooktop, allowing heat to build directly within the cookware itself. This makes cast iron compatible and highly efficient on induction surfaces.

One of the key advantages of cast iron pots and pans is their excellent heat retention. Once heated, they hold onto that heat for a long time, which makes them ideal for slow cooking, searing, frying, and oven-style dishes. 

On an induction cooktop, this heat retention works particularly well because the cooktop can rapidly bring the pan up to temperature, while the cast iron maintains steady, even heat throughout cooking.

Most cast iron cookware also features a completely flat and heavy base, which ensures strong contact with the induction surface. This helps maximise energy transfer and improves cooking consistency. The weight of cast iron can also reduce vibration, which may slightly minimise the buzzing sound sometimes associated with induction cooking.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel cookware is another popular choice for induction cooking. However, not all stainless steel is induction-compatible. In order to work on an induction cooktop, it needs a magnetic base layer that can interact with the cooktop’s magnetic field.

Many cookware sets achieve this by using a layered or encapsulated base that includes a magnetic stainless steel disc, even if the inner layers are made from aluminium or copper for better heat distribution.

One of the biggest advantages of stainless steel cookware is its versatility. It is lightweight compared to cast iron, resistant to rust and corrosion, and highly durable for everyday use. On induction cooktops, stainless steel pans heat quickly and respond well to temperature changes, making them suitable for a wide range of cooking techniques, from simmering sauces to sautéing vegetables.

Another key feature is the flat, stable base, which is essential for efficient induction cooking. This ensures maximum surface contact with the cooktop, improving performance and reducing noise or vibration. Stainless steel cookware is also oven-safe in most cases, making it a flexible option for home cooks who want seamless transitions from stovetop to oven.

Carbon Steel

This is very similar to cast iron in behaviour. It’s lighter and heats up faster. Carbon steel pans and pots are magnetic because they’re made mostly of iron (which reacts strongly to magnets) and are usually compatible with induction cooktops.

How Do I Know If My Cookware Is Induction-Compatible?

If you’re not sure, you can check for an “induction compatible” symbol on the bottom of your cookware, which looks like a coil of wire, or for the word “induction” inscribed on it. 

You can also do the magnet test. Grab a magnet and touch it to the centre of the pan’s base. If it clings tightly, the pan is induction-ready. If it slides off or has a weak pull, the pan won’t heat up.

Last but not least, if you’re considering induction suitable cookware, keep in mind that only the cooktop uses induction technology. The oven works the same as any electric range, so you can continue using the same cookware and bakeware you already have.
