How my home smells at any given moment is something I’m religious about. I got it from my mother, who has such a sensitive nose that every time the neighbour would go out on his balcony for a smoke, she’d get up fast and close all the doors and windows just so the smell of cigarettes doesn’t get in. Although I never minded it, I can understand her now. For a non-smoker, the smell of cigarettes in the room is just horrible. And that became part of my way of functioning, so when I moved in with my boyfriend in our new apartment, the first thing I forbid was smoking inside or cooking without the rangehood on – another horrible smell.
Another thing I did to make sure I am always happy when I enter my home is buying a few ultrasonic diffusers that spread the smell of essential oils. Ah, nothing like coming home from an exhausting day and being welcomed by a cool atmosphere and a soothing smell of vanilla. Instant relaxation and mood on. My boyfriend loved it too, so I decided to do a little digging on all the essential oils I can use to reach different mood and health effects.
The morning refresher
Besides the smell of fresh, hot coffee in the morning that opens my eyes, I like to get up and actually be mentally ready to start the day with full force. And stimulating your brain goes kind of slowly in the morning right? Especially after you took a shower and made yourself a cup of coffee and are sitting and planning the day slowly, knowing that you don’t have that time. Well, a mixture of 4 drops of wild orange and 4 drops of peppermint in your ultrasonic diffusers is the type of blend to use if you need to be all awake just after you splash your eyes with cold water. It’s also a good option for afternoon pick me up moments, especially if you come home all mentally tired, like we do.
A few drops can make you happy
Or increase your happiness! It’s been proven that smells can stimulate different parts of your brain including the one that produces the happiness hormones. So why not be more happy than you already are? Put in your diffuser a blend of 3 drops of Bergamot, 2 drops of Geranium and 3 drops of Lavender. This is especially good to use when you have guests coming over for a gathering, to keep the mood up.
For an even better good night sleep
I turn off every electronic device we have in our home an hour before we go to sleep. I open all windows and doors for fresh air to get in for like 15-20 minutes and then prepare the atmosphere for sleeping. It’s good to have kind of soft and calming ambiance so your mind and body are calmed down, and you get relieved from all the stress from the day. So, 3 drops of Lavender, 3 drops of Wild Orange and 3 drops of Roman Chamomile in the ultrasonic diffusers right before you fall asleep for much more pleasant dreams.
