If you haven’t spayed your dog yet, and she went into a heat cycle you’re probably having tons of questions and concerns. A dog’s heat cycle is not the most pleasant experience for her, or for you, for that matter. Having to clean up after her and deal properly with the changes in her behaviour can be quite a handful.
Luckily, there are many things you can do to make it easier for both of you. To help keep your lady comfortable and safe until you can get her spayed, here are some steps you can take.
Have Some Dog Diapers on Hand
You will notice that your dog has started her estrus (heat cycle) when you find blood all over her favourite spots, like her bed or around the house. She may also urinate more often and be prone to accidents. Using absorbent dogs diapers can help protect your home from estrus bleeding and accidental leaks.
The first thing to check is that the diaper fits properly. While some owners make improvised doggie diapers from diapers for human newborns or incontinent adults, they can be difficult to fit properly. Humans are slightly different in shape and obviously lack tails.
The best way to go is to buy special dog diapers for females in heat. There are many types of dog period diapers – most of them are partially or fully disposable for convenience. But if you prefer to make sustainable choices, some of them can be washed and cleaned.
When choosing female dog sanitary pads, make sure to get something that is made of moisture-wicking fabric and offers breathability. Also, choose a size that’s suitable for her. Avoid using puppy diapers which may be too small for her. You don’t want the diaper to be too tight as it can irritate the skin. However, it shouldn’t be too loose either as it may not stay up. One way to keep the diaper up is to use suspenders.
Make sure your pet gets frequent diaper changes to avoid skin irritation and urinary tract issues. It may take some time for some dogs to learn that wearing a diaper is a positive thing, so be ready to give them treats.
The ideal dog diaper varies depending on the shape and needs of your pet, thus there is no one-size-fits-all solution. If you don’t intend to breed your pet, spaying her is the best way to avoid dealing with heat cycles.
Make Her Comfortable
Because of her hormonal ups and downs, your dog may be confused and in need of some extra care. She might be yowling as she prowls about the home. To put her at ease, try to maintain her comfort level as much as you can. See your veterinarian if you believe your pet may be experiencing severe pain or if she is displaying unusual signs of discomfort or agitation.
Snuggle Up
During their estrus, dogs need more affection. Extra hugs and kisses are a must during this time. A lap desk could be useful for multitasking. She can curl up alongside you as you work. If you have to leave for work or go somewhere, layer her bed with your favourite blanket so she can feel your scent when you’re not at home.
Treat Her Extra Special
If you’ve experienced a human period, you know that people get some extreme cravings during this time. Well, dogs are the same too. For a sense of security, give your lady a chew-resistant toy or some of her favourite treats.
No Scolding
Accidents will occur during this time, and she will be aware of them. That said, avoid being mad at her and using harsh language and tone. While you clean up accidents, just comfort her in a calm manner.
Frequent Walks
During this time, it’s likely that your dog will need to stay extra hydrated and drink more water. That said, another way to keep her comfortable and avoid accidents (besides using diapers) is to take her on more frequent walks.
Watch Her Closely
A dog in estrus will do everything it takes to locate a partner; the only thing on her mind is reproducing. That said, it’s crucial to keep her under constant supervision or confined to a safe space where she can not escape and other dogs can not enter. Make sure the enclosure is safe because there have been incidents of dogs using chainlink fences to escape or even get pregnant.
And Be Watchful of Other Dogs
On these frequent walks, she may get some unwanted attention from other dogs in heat. Female dogs may attack her and male dogs may try to do their business with her. Stay on the lookout when taking breaks outside. Additionally, if you meet any four-legged suitor, keep them apart to avoid any unanticipated surprises.
Inform your veterinarian if you had an unwelcome encounter. If you are worried about unintentional mating, there is a morning-after injection that may be given to pups to end pregnancies. However, this has a time limit, so get in touch with your veterinarian as soon as possible.
